Short answer: Visceral fat, the fat packed around your organs, responds to the basics: regular aerobic movement, cutting out sugary drinks, fewer refined carbohydrates, less alcohol, enough sleep and a way to manage stress. Track it with a tape measure at your waist, not just the scale. A probiotic can sit on top of those habits, ideally one with human-trial evidence on visceral fat. Lactobacillus gasseri BNR17® showed 21.6 cm² less visceral fat than placebo in a 12-week CT-scan trial. Individual results may vary.

The fat you cannot pinch

Teh tarik at breakfast. Nasi lemak at your desk. Eight hours in a chair. Roti canai at the mamak at 11pm because the match is on. None of it looks dramatic, and the scale might barely move from one year to the next. But the waistband notices, especially after 40.

Fat under the skin is the soft layer you can pinch. Visceral fat sits deeper, around the liver, pancreas and intestines, and it is the type most closely linked with long-term metabolic health. You can carry too much of it at a normal weight, a pattern known as TOFI: thin outside, fat inside.

First, measure the right thing

Only a CT, MRI or DEXA scan measures visceral fat directly. At home, your waist is the best everyday guide. Measure around your middle at the level of your navel, breathing out normally. For Asian adults, a waist above 90 cm for men or 80 cm for women is commonly used as a sign of higher metabolic risk.

Write the number down and check it every four weeks. Not sure where you stand? Try the five-question TOFI check.

Five habits that move visceral fat

1. Move most days, and get a little out of breath

Regular aerobic activity, such as brisk walking, cycling or swimming, is one of the most consistent ways to reduce visceral fat in studies, even when weight changes little. Aim for about 150 minutes a week, and break up long stretches of sitting.

2. Kosongkan your drinks

Every teh tarik, kopi, bubble tea or soft drink carries sugar and calories that do not fill you up, and they add up quietly over a week until they cancel out your effort. Do not wean off slowly; switch now. Choose drinks with no calories: plain water, plain tea, green tea or black coffee, all kosong. If you must have milk, add a little plain milk only, with no sugar and no condensed milk.

3. Rethink the rice, not the meal

Keep the lauk, halve the rice and fill the space with vegetables. Refined carbohydrates eaten in large portions, especially late at night, make it easier to store fat around the middle.

4. Sleep and stress count

Short sleep and long-running stress are both linked with more abdominal fat. A fixed bedtime and a phone left outside the bedroom do more than most supplements.

5. Go easy on alcohol

Alcohol is energy the body tends to store centrally. Fewer drinking nights a week is a measurable change.

Where a probiotic fits

A probiotic will not out-run a lifestyle that is working against you, and any product that claims it can is selling hype. But one strain has been tested on visceral fat itself. Here is how to test any fat loss probiotic claim.

In a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial at Seoul National University Hospital, 90 adults followed the same mild diet and activity plan for 12 weeks. Those also taking 10 billion CFU of Lactobacillus gasseri BNR17® a day finished with 21.6 cm² less visceral fat than placebo, measured by CT scan, and their waist measurements fell from baseline. Body weight did not differ significantly from placebo. Inches, not hype.

In laboratory studies in mice, BNR17® raised fat-burning gene activity and turned dietary sugars into fibre-like chains the body could not absorb. These are animal findings and have not been confirmed in people.

BNRThin Slim+ carries that strain at that dose in one 2 g green-apple sachet a day, tipped straight onto the tongue. It contains no stimulants and no laxatives. Read the full evidence in Is there a probiotic for visceral fat?

A 12-week plan

  • Week 0: measure your waist and write it down.
  • Weeks 1–2: switch to kosong drinks (water, plain tea, green tea or black coffee), add a 20-minute walk after dinner, start one BNRThin Slim+ sachet a day.
  • Weeks 3–8: build to about 150 minutes of movement a week; halve the rice at dinner.
  • Week 12: measure again, the same way, at the same time of day.

Two weeks to begin. Twelve weeks to see what the science saw. If you have a medical condition, are pregnant or take regular medication, speak to your doctor before changing your routine or adding a supplement.

Questions people ask

What is the fastest way to reduce visceral fat?

There is no shortcut, but regular aerobic activity, cutting sugary drinks and refined carbohydrates, less alcohol and better sleep consistently reduce visceral fat. Measure your waist every four weeks to track progress.

Can a probiotic reduce visceral fat?

One strain has human-trial evidence. In a 12-week placebo-controlled trial, adults taking 10 billion CFU of Lactobacillus gasseri BNR17 a day had 21.6 cm² less visceral fat than placebo, measured by CT scan. Individual results may vary.

How do I know if I have too much visceral fat?

Only a CT, MRI or DEXA scan measures it directly. For Asian adults, a waist above 90 cm for men or 80 cm for women is commonly used as a sign of higher metabolic risk.

Can you have visceral fat if you are slim?

Yes. This is called TOFI, thin outside, fat inside: a normal weight with a high amount of fat around the organs.
