Short answer: A fat loss probiotic is only worth the name if a specific strain, at a specific dose, has been shown in a placebo-controlled human trial to change body fat, measured properly. Lactobacillus gasseri BNR17® is one of the few that has: in a 12-week trial at Seoul National University Hospital, adults taking 10 billion CFU a day finished with 21.6 cm² less visceral fat than placebo, measured by CT scan. It is a fat composition result, not a scale-weight result. Individual results may vary.
You have probably been burned before
The slimming tea that kept you near the toilet all afternoon. The capsule that made your heart race at your desk. The “detox” sachet that worked for a week, until it did not. Most Malaysians over 30 have a story like this, and most of those products had one thing in common: no human trial behind the claim on the box.
So when you see “fat loss probiotic”, scepticism is the right starting point. Here is how to test the claim, and what one strain actually showed.
Fat loss is not the same as weight loss
A bathroom scale weighs everything at once: water, muscle, bone, food in transit and fat. It cannot tell you where the fat sits. The fat that matters most for long-term health is visceral fat, packed around the liver and other organs, and it can grow while your weight barely moves.
That is why the useful question is not “will I weigh less?” It is “will I carry less fat, in the places that count?” Everything fits. Except your waistband.
Four questions to ask any fat loss probiotic
- Which strain? Results belong to a named strain, not to a species. “Lactobacillus gasseri” on a label tells you nothing until you know which one.
- What dose? The product should contain the amount used in the trial, guaranteed to expiry, not just at the time it was made.
- Was there a placebo group? Without one, you cannot tell the probiotic’s effect from the effect of simply paying attention to your health for three months.
- How was fat measured? A CT or MRI scan measures visceral fat directly. A tape measure helps. A scale alone cannot.
What BNR17® showed
In 2018, researchers at Seoul National University Hospital published a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in the Journal of Medicinal Food. Ninety adults with a body mass index of 25 to 35 took placebo, a low dose or a high dose of BNR17® for 12 weeks. Every group followed the same mild diet and activity plan.
At 10 billion CFU a day, the high-dose group finished with 21.6 cm² less visceral fat than placebo, measured by CT scan. Waist circumference also fell from baseline. No adverse events were reported. An earlier 12-week trial (Jung et al., 2013, n = 57) found waist down 2.0 cm, hip down 2.8 cm and BMI down 0.5 from baseline in the BNR17® group.
Body weight did not differ significantly from placebo. That is the honest headline, and the useful one: the change was in fat composition. Inches, not hype.
How it may work
In laboratory studies in mice, BNR17® raised the activity of genes that burn fatty acids, and turned dietary sugars into indigestible, fibre-like chains that left the body instead of being absorbed. Burns more fat. Absorbs less sugar. These are laboratory findings that offer a mechanism; they have not been confirmed directly in people.
A separate human study found BNR17® in the stool of 26 of 30 people who took it, and none of 12 on placebo. It arrives alive. Live to gut. We checked.
What it is not
BNR17® contains no stimulants and no laxatives. It will not speed your heart or empty your gut. It does not replace food choices, sleep or movement; in the trial, everyone followed the same mild plan, and the probiotic was the difference on top of it.
How to use it
BNRThin Slim+ carries BNR17® at the trial dose: 10 billion CFU in one 2 g green-apple sachet a day, tipped straight onto the tongue. Direct-to-mouth Meltz, about fifteen seconds. One box is two weeks; the trials ran 12 weeks, which is six boxes. Two weeks to begin. Twelve weeks to see what the science saw.

Questions people ask
What is a fat loss probiotic?
A probiotic strain that has been shown in a placebo-controlled human trial to change body fat, measured by scan. Lactobacillus gasseri BNR17 is one example: in a 12-week trial, adults taking 10 billion CFU a day had 21.6 cm² less visceral fat than placebo, measured by CT scan.
Do probiotics help you lose weight?
The evidence for BNR17 is about fat composition rather than scale weight. Body weight did not differ significantly from placebo; visceral fat, waist, hip and BMI were the measures that changed.
How long does a fat loss probiotic take to work?
The BNR17 human trials ran for 12 weeks, so plan in 12-week blocks and track your waist in centimetres rather than daily scale readings.
Is BNR17 a stimulant or laxative?
No. BNRThin Slim+ contains no stimulants and no laxatives. It is a single-strain probiotic with vitamin D and zinc.
